Monkey Sox, the latest brand to join our line up.
Socks. Something that might be considered a rather dry topic by some but for me I can chat all day about different socks, I know very nerdy. Well for most people you slip a pair on and forget about them.
But what about socks that made a difference not only for your feet but also for people. Well, that's exactly what Monkey Sox are doing. Still, a relatively new brand having only started in 2018 they have come out swinging. There aim to increase exposure for Multiple Sclerosis while making incredible performance socks. Their funky designs and bright colours draw your attention along with the fact they donate 50% of the company's profits to 3 different Multiple Sclerosis charities. We were lucky enough to ask the owners James and Lianne a few questions about Multiple Sclerosis and their business.
So, James, you were diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis in 2016, how has it changed your life? *
"It has helped provide answers as to why I was getting the leg weakness, blurred vision and pins and needles. It has motivated me to stay active and enabled me to get treatment to slow the progression of the disease. But also it has allowed us both to set up Monkey Sox to provide great quality performance socks, help keep people active, raise awareness of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and money for 3 MS Charities to try to help stop MS. Knowing I have MS has made me even more motivated to stay as active as I can for as long as I can! Be that walking instead of driving or running a marathon, it’s just about getting out there!"
"We never dreamed of the amount of support we’ve had from the sporting and MS community. This has really helped us gain exposure. Blogs like this and stores like Accelerate are so important in helping us get out there. And for that, we are very grateful."
Since starting back in 2018 did you see Monkey Sox going this far?
"Never! It excites us every day when we get contacted by a customer saying how the socks have motivated them to get back and active or have helped explain the feeling of having MS."
Where do you see Monkey Sox going in the future?
"We hope on a long and far journey around the world! But no matter where we go, the main thing for us is to keep making comfortable socks that perform, keep everyone active and raise awareness of MS, which affects people all the world."
I’m not sure if you cycle or run more but this applies to either, where is your favourite place to run/ride?
"I’m very much a fair weather cyclist, haha! The heat really makes my symptoms of leg weakness and poor vision a lot worse. There is nothing I love more than a winter, early morning run, sun low in the sky and heading out into Bushy Park in SW London for a gentle 5k run!!"
*As I'm writing this I'm aware not everyone may know some of the effects of MS as I didn't before this. Multiple sclerosis is a condition that can affect the brain and spinal cord, causing a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance. It's a lifelong condition that can sometimes cause serious disability, although it can occasionally be mild. In many cases, it's possible to treat symptoms.
