The Cloudsurfer is one of the original On running shoes.
When you first open the box your attention is immediately drawn to On’s attention to the finest of detail, even the packaging is a work of art. On’s ‘guaranteed happiness’ hits you as soon as you lay eyes on the shoe and carrys on until the last time you lace them up. The Surfer has a distinctive design and is a timeless classic, an organic looking shoe, “Swiss engineering at its finest”.
As soon as you lace up the On Cloudsurfer, you are greeted with a message printed on the insole: "Unleash your speed" and this is what this shoe does. When you push off for your first run you appreciate the new hyper-responsive speedboard. This is a flexible thermoplastic polymer plate there to maximizes energy return to propel you forward with each step, not unlike the carbon fibre plate found in that world resetting shoe. In less fancy words its basically a spring under the shoe that help push you forward with every step.
The Cloudsurfer is a well cushioned, thanks to even more of On’s exclusive ‘clouds’ (CloudTec pillows) on the sole of the shoe than previous models, making every stride seem effortless straight out of the box. Your feet are protected from taking a beating by a split layer of cushioning. A thin top layer wraps around the entire midsole, while a second layer is positioned between the midsole and the exposed cloud pods under the heel.
The materials used in the Cloudsurfer ticks every box, the Air mesh allows for breathability without sacrificing style and the toe box has enough room for you to move your toes whilst the shoe remains secure around the foot.
It also has a new insole that is stitched onto a thin rubber pad—this keeps your feet from sliding around during tight turns or while pounding downhill.
Compared to previous models the new Cloudsurfer has plastic clips around the heel that keeps the foot in place when traveling at faster speeds and the speedboard underfoot helps to provides a stable platform for your foot to push off from.
These shoes are best used primarily for road running, they have enough grip to stop you slipping in the wet. Whether you use them on light trails is up to the runner as they tend to pick up stones and pebbles as you run on these surfaces.
The size and fit of the shoe are excellent. The ride is extremely comfortable on long runs, legs feel good and no blisters. They are not the best for speed sessions as they are a little bit heavier than other models, but if you had them you wouldn’t be disappointed. As with all On running shoes the grip gradually goes from the sole and the CloudTec pillows become less affective, but this doesn’t deter as the shoe will still be good for about 350 miles.
- Shoe looks good
- Well Made
- Surprisingly hardwearing
- Pick up stones
- Laces are a bit flimsy
- Heavier than previous models
In my opinion this Running shoe is best suited to the road runner that is banking a lot of training miles, and a good shoe to take on races up to marathon distance.
