Will Burton is a member of Team Accelerate-SCOTT, and regularly trains with the watchful eye of coach Stu. However Will is also incredible when it comes to playing the Tuba, so amazing in fact he made it to the finals for Young Muscian of the Year for Brass instruments. Post competition Will has put pen to paper with his thoughts on the correlation between running and music. With music, just like running, I feel it is always important to push yourself. In both disciplines, finding new challenges brings about the greatest improvement. I was certainly nervous before the competition, … Continue reading
Harry Smith is an Accelerate Community member and a regular at Running past 50, he shares his reason behind getting out the door for a run and its positive effect on his mental and physical health. ‘Pain is inevitable, Suffering is optional ‘The words of Haruki Murakami when talking about running. I started to run just 2 months short of my 72nd birthday. Dragooned into accompanying my 7-yearold Granddaughter on a park run As a fairly fit twice a week Derbyshire fell walker and numerous long-distance paths completed, i.e. Pennine Way and Coast to Coast, the thought of a 5-kilometre … Continue reading
Running Power… go on then what do you think this actually means? Power, is nothing new in sporting terms as cyclists have been developing this as a means of training to a high level for some time. In running it is still very much in its infancy. Garmin have had an app for a while yet the real pioneers have been Stryd. When heart rate first came along back in the 80’s and into the 90’s it was a different story. Take your average sports watch and add in heart rate – away you go. And I am not talking about who is the faster. There does appear to be one very common thread throughout what people talk about, with regard to Running Objectives. This occurs across the spectrum of running participation, regardless of time spent running on a … Continue reading
Many just don’t think about it, yet why do you run? For the joy of it, a healthy glow? To be with friends, to catch up after work? To reach new racing goals, to run faster for a PB? The truth probably lies in a mix of the above and will change through the year and most definitely during a life time of running. Yet it is still important to understand the ‘Mix’ as it should then help direct your purpose for training. We all like company when we train, it has been shown to benefit those searching for the … Continue reading
There is so much information about run training and racing that is readily available today. The trouble is knowing what is qualified and what is not. Is it something based on fact and long time experience, or is it anecdotal and just something that worked the once? It really is a minefield. Then you add into the mix the fact that experts produce something that is correct yet very generic, or part of a more involved plan that therefore needs a more careful and thoughtful approach to tailor it to the individual. Yet more of a minefield. The availability of … Continue reading
