A lot of people come to Accelerate Store and the Accelerate Performance Centre complaining of injury or fatigue and they haven’t a clue where it came from or why. Where, to me it seems obvious. They often describe the way in which they’ve completed a series of runs (long, hilly, frequent or back to back in some cases) and what these people have in common is the way in which they misinterpret the factors that led to their eventual breaking point. But here’s a quick analogy to spell it out. Russian Roulette is a game where people dumb enough … Continue reading
Here’s the map (click for large version). ..and the elevation… The Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon – Sheffield or PYHMS is a 13.1 mile race that takes you all the way up to Ringinglow and beyond, before heading back the way you came – via the village of Dore. The up starts in the city centre and doesn’t stop until you hit the 5.27mile mark, which you can see on the elevation graph above. But take a closer look at that graph and you’ll notice that it’s hardly downhill all the way back either. It undulates in such a way … Continue reading
For as long as I’ve taken part in organised running events, I’ve admired the work of the many Marshalls who provide support and assistance before, during and after each one. They’re often, if not always volunteers and they give up a great deal of time, effort and comfort in order to create and maintain as safe and enjoyable an experience for us runners as they can. I count myself as being enormously fortunate not to have had to deal with a major injury since I began competing 8 years ago. Probably the most serious was a medial ligament strain after doing burpees with poor technique in a circuit session. However, like most of us who train day in day out, I’ve had my fair share of niggles. I estimate that I probably have to cope with an injury for two to three weeks every year. In the grand scheme of things that isn’t massive. However, as I think most sporty people will tell you, even those … Continue reading
This weekend it’s the 2016 High Peak Marathon (HPM). A challenging race that starts at 11pm and involves a 42 mile run across very hilly terrain, often covered in deep bog and massive expanses of open featureless moorland that can be exposed to some horrible winter conditions, while runners attempt to navigate the course through the night without getting lost or hypothermic, or both. I completed it in 2015. It took an agonising 13hrs and 40mins or so. I assumed that with a year to practice and plenty of appreciation of the demands, I could get fitter, stronger and … Continue reading
