London Marathon is on Sunday! Here are my top tips for last minute preparation in terms of nutrition: Check what is available to eat the night before if you’re staying away Plan breakfast and make sure you can eat what you would normally eat wherever you are staying. Don’t try something new as you don’t know how your body will react Make sure you know which gels you will be using and have tried them out. Gels and energy drinks can sometimes upset stomachs so if you plan to use them, make sure you have run with them Over the … Continue reading
It is always said that if you fall off your bike that the best thing to do is get straight back on and get on with it. So the time has come for me to get back on my bike and enter a race. Yes, it will be running. So a year later from having ripped my quad tendon off my knee cap, it is time. I have run plenty of half marathons in the past yet never one that involved a mountain. So the Scott Snowdonia Trail Half Marathon beckons, with a mere 1236 metres of ascent or around four Lose Hill’s! No … Continue reading
The 2015 ETU European Powerman Championships in the Netherlands was the first time I would be officially racing with the Elite field. Having placed in the top 10 on my Powerman debut at the 2014 World Championships, but racing as an age grouper, I was delighted to be selected for the British Triathlon Elite team for the European Champs. One of the great things about the Powerman world series is that every race is very different. Not just the terrain but also the distance. This can vary from 10k run – 60k bike – 10k run (the European Champs format), … Continue reading
WOW! I just took part in the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon – Sheffield. As races go – I think this might have been my favourite of all time. Not for achievement. Not for spectacular, once in a lifetime experience. But for sheer fun and atmosphere in a local event that makes you proud to have been there. The crowds were out in force and lined almost the entire length of the course. It was the kind of thing I’ve seen in countless run films, cycling races and so on, but never until now had the pleasure of taking part … Continue reading
Indeed, a well earned rest can do wonders for you, especially following a tough run or hard racing. Yesterday saw one of the UK’s toughest half marathons take place from the centre of Sheffield, the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon and the key for every runner is getting the rest and recovery right from giving their bodies a right pounding. For those that competed a massive well done, it was a tough event! Achy legs are one thing, energy levels another and what about the most important muscle in your body? It all takes time to recover, repair and replenish the … Continue reading
Indeed, what goes up, will invariably come down and that could just be the problem. The latest incarnation of the Sheffield Half Marathon, the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon, sees 7,500 runners toeing the start line tomorrow morning on what promises to be a pretty tough course. Sheffield is renowned for its hills, its location to the edge of the Peak District and the number of Park Runs hosted by the City. So all in all it should be a cracking run as each of these aspects are covered. For many a runner it will be the challenge of this course and … Continue reading
Seems like only this time last year I was running round the inaugural Trail Rush race. In actual fact that was in July, with this year’s race having jumped forward to the 24th of May – with it bringing what should be cooler weather. Accelerate are proud to once again sponsor this event and for me, this route is hard to beat. Genuinely challenging for those who want to run fast, but incredibly rewarding for fans of picturesque urban trail. Here then, is a recap of the race – with updates here or there from memory (and last year’s … Continue reading
Sheffield Half Marathon (the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon Sheffield) is in one week. Entry was paid for by my employers as a Christmas gift. Regular running to and from work had me building a base all winter, but tapering ahead of the High Peak Marathon meant less running. Frost bitten feet meant running hasn’t been quite right for a while and the HPM reduced me to a walk by the end. Recovery post ultra has meant even more time without enough running. Hiking/Mountaineering in the Scottish Highlands has stressed my lower legs until I developed a tight left calf … Continue reading
