Racing is often a nervous experience as it is the moment when you find out whether all the training you have done has paid off. Have those little amendments to your training translated into little marginal gains. Its great to get the honest feedback of racing to see whether the changes have worked. I just returned from a great trip to Scotland. I was treated to a stop over by my close friends, who’d clubbed together and paid for the entire thing, in order for me to go hike the CMD arete onto Ben Nevis. I’d done the same route in clear autumn, but these were proper winter conditions. After driving via Glasgow for a night in a hotel, we drove the rest on the Friday. So what does it feel like to take part in the High Peak Marathon? In a word…….exhausting. The race starts at 11pm, with walkers having been allowed to set off an hour in advance. This time there was just one team of walkers, who got going after a very sporting round of applause from everybody else. We went through a thorough kit check, which I found refreshing, since so many events explain the requirements for kit, but seem to assume that all will conform.
