I thought I’d share my thought on the Salomon S-LAB Exo Twinskin Shorts, since I was given some to test a couple of months ago and have been using them to run in ever since. I wasn’t specifically asked to contribute a review, so I haven’t. I’ve taken the liberty of offering my two-penneth. Here it is.
Developed with the help of elite athletes, Salomon S-LAB clothing is a little more technical, a little more refined than the rest of their impressive range. It’s what makes the difference when top runners are training and racing in extremely challenging competitions and/or climates.
For me then, they should surely make running to work and back a little more tolerable – right?
Well, they take a little getting used to (they take a little getting on), but when you get ’em pulled up and feel the squeeze around the thighs, you can tell that they’re working. A short time into a run I can feel that they’re supporting my legs, helping me work, holding the muscles and preventing the kind of shakes that cause tissue damage and misalignment when tired.
In terms of wicking, they’re brilliantly effective. I feel dry and warm, despite the enormous amount of rain I’ve endured on my way to and from work of late. By home time, they’re dry again and I don’t have to climb into soggy shorts. That outer layer of Actilite stretch mesh doing a tremendous job of spreading and evaporating whatever moisture comes its way. There are also three built in gel pockets situated around the waist line, which is nice. The outer layer cuts away on the inside leg, so as to avoid friction or gathering which may create rubbing unnecessarily. Clever. In the same way many fellas will don shorts over tights to protect their modesty, these shorts provide a nice aesthetic that skin tight lycra alone can sometimes fail to deliver.
I’ve gone from day one – thinking to myself “I’m not sure I get on with these”, to choosing them over all my other shorts. I probably would have switched to tights by now, were it not for how good I feel in these shorts. Thanks to their layers – I still feel warm when the weather’s touching zero degrees, but I don’t feel that they’re making me hot at all. I feel stronger in them, with complete comfort thanks to the in-built underwear and seamless construction. They’re actually really really good. I can’t wait to try them on a long run (arguably – where they make most difference), but that’s just not happening for a few months yet.
So they’re odd at first, with a tight feel, but a secure fit and plenty of comfort. Functional and for those who already run long distances, perfect for avoiding chafing or irritation. Wicking, moisture management and compression to increase blood flow, therefore fuelling muscles with more Oxygen and removing Lactic Acid much quicker, aiding recovery.
I find myself searching for them, despite the wealth of alternatives in my kit bag. A very respectable pair of shorts and then some.
If you’re tempted to try these shorts for yourself, they’re available here.
