The High Peak 40 miler has challenged me time and time again, so far defeating me only the once(due to a chest infection). This year posed the usual problem – how exactly do I shave even more time off my personal best? It’s no secret I’ve been training more specifically towards this type of event throughout 2013. I set myself targets, realistic targets like ‘faster half marathon’ – check. ‘Completion of the Long Tour of Bradwell’ – check. ‘New PB on the HP40’……….CHECK! Just shaved a whole hour from last year’s hard fought 7hr.46min. How did I do it? … Continue reading
Yes, that’s pretty much the first thing we ask upon arrival at our destination for the night. We are travelling pretty light and this is all part of the plan for this journey. We have looked ahead at the weather, considered our options for our ‘evening attire’ and then packed. We have both gone for full waterproof cover, Debs the Montane Minimus, whilst I have opted for the more breathable Montane ‘Air’ jacket, which is made from Event fabric. We have both started our run in shorts (Patagonia) and for Debs a super light weight Patagonia tee. Debs also carried a pair … Continue reading
Hey folks, just a quick word about the Nine Edges Endurance Race that took place on Saturday. Amazing! The Edale Mountain Rescue Team organise the event and with the assistance of some fine volunteers, they make the day a brilliant experience. The route begins at Fairholmes underneath the Derwent Dam, then travels across Derwent, Stanage, Burbage North, Burbage South, Froggatt, Curbar, Baslow, Gardoms and Birchen Edges, ending at the Robin Hood pub outside Baslow. The 20 miles passed surprisingly well, with me taking it steady in advance of this week’s High Peak 40. That said, I got a little … Continue reading
Debs and I are married. We’ve tied the knot, a mere five days ago. Now for the honeymoon, yet nothing was boked. All we knew is that we wanted a running holiday, a journey. After much debate, seeking of opinions and checking of maps we opted for the little known ‘Dales Highway’. Approximately 90-miles, starting in Saltaire in the south and finishing in Appleby in the north. The route takes a fairly direct line, south to north through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. So that’s that, sorted, we’re outta here… We began on the Wednesday, a little further north and little to … Continue reading
Not long now, if you’re off to try the High Peak 40 Mile Challenge on 20th September, then here – for what it’s worth, is a description. Look at this map. Leave it open while we discuss the route in a little more detail: Start 8am, and run steadily without over doing it. You’ll catch those over enthusiastic sorts soon enough when things bottle neck at a stile on a steep hillside about 1 mile from the start line. After a nice little downhill and disused railway section, you reach CP1. Drink. Steep downhill almost immediately, DON’T GO TOO … Continue reading
