Hello. I’ve just been for a run. Wow, that is interesting, where did you go? I went to Burbage Valley just outside of Sheffield. Parked at the little car park, off the road between Fox House and Toad’s Mouth and set off through the gate, along the path. Any good? Yes, very good thank you – I went first thing and there was nobody else there the entire time I was running. What time was that exactly, and what was it like? Well, I set off at about 7.40am and it was clear with a gentle breeze – around … Continue reading
No runner exists alone, they rely on what Accelerate like to call ‘Team You‘. The network of people who allow you to achieve the amount you currently do include: family, friends and those people down at your local running store, whoever facilitates your runs by offering equipment, advice, events, marshalls and a lift home from a hard race. They all count toward your success. It’s the ones at home coping without you – so you can disappear for hours on end. As you begin to take your running more seriously (which might be anything from attempting a second lap … Continue reading
Rain, snow, ice, biting wind, pitch black morning runs, indoor training, numb hands, numb feet, the lure of a warm bed on a freezing cold training morning, hats, gloves, snoods, arm warners, leg warmers, thermal bib shorts, extra layers…. These are just some of things that make up the winter training ritual. It can be a long slog. However…for anyone who went out riding or running yesterday and today, Im sure you’ll agree that all that struggle over the winter was worth it! Glorious conditions. Great to have put in the hours over the last few months to be able … Continue reading

Updated for 2014: This is a revised version of my original Sheffield Half Marathon guide, adding the new start/finish for 2014 – in place of the now demolished Don Valley Stadium. I have not completed this version of the course, so where different this time around, I have elected to copy in the official race description from the event website. The following then is a mix of new content and my article from 2013. Disclaimer: This is not a ‘how to’ guide. I am in no way qualified to tell you how you should approach such a race. Depending on … Continue reading

Just spent a fantastic week training in Sheffield.Great to see friends + family and generally spend time in the best place I know for training in the UK. Nothing beats the feeling of running out into the Peak District on untouched snow first thing in the morning. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it. Thanks Sheffield, see you again soon. Might even bring some race shoes next time.
