Dot’s 2014 race review

My race year did not go exactly to plan.

I had set myself a challenging year to include more fell running. In February I would go up to Maryport, Cumbria for the BMAF 10mile road championships. In March I would attempt the Edale Skyline fell race and then would apply for the BMAF mountain running championship in Telfes Austria in early September. It is only 8k in distance but 760m elevation.

After a very good 2013, probably my best running year so far, I was ready for anything but a diagnosis of breast cancer following a routine scan threw all my plans into turmoil. I managed to do a very wet Tigger Tor in late January before surgery to remove the tumour in mid February. That blew the BMAF 10mile race. A second excision in March blew the Edale Skyline too, so I quickly applied to do Derwent Dambuster as a consolation. My fitness was reduced by the lay-off following surgery and I found Derwent Dambuster particularly hard.

Running to and from Weston Park for radiotherapy each day for six weeks helped me to feel better and improve overall fitness so I went off to North Yorkshire intending to do my best in the Hardmoors Rosedale Round. Despite getting a little lost I came in as first F50. That was the signal I needed to focus more on hill work and enjoy the delights of the Peak District. Stuart Hale at Accelerate and Scott Running gave me the coaching, drills, kit and support I needed to recover from breast cancer and end the year on a high. I will plan the next year to include the BMAF mountain championships and hope to be on top form in 2015. Dot Kesterton.
