My OMM 2014

Posted on by Guest Blogger

It’s September 2010.  6pm.  On the bank of Haweswater reservoir in Cumbria (famous as a location for the cult film ‘Withnail and I).  ‘I’m in what I thought was a reasonable tent.  A one man tent.  My friend and teammate is next to me in his identical one man tent.  It’s just gone dark and we’re about to spend one of the most uncomfortable nights of our life. We were participating in an event called the ‘Rab’, organised and sponsored by the outdoor equipment company of the same name.  We’re supposed to be at a designated camp site, together … Continue reading

OMM 2014

Posted on by Guest Blogger

I really like the OMM events and this is always my highlight of my running year. I like the fact that it is not always about the running – kit choice, navigation, route choice, mountain skills all play a part in the event. What I am really saying is that us slower runners can get ourselves up the leader board by being clever and not just by being fast. So Chris asked if I fancied having a go this year with him and this seemed a good opportunity to have a focus for some much needed training. The last few … Continue reading

‘Peak’ Training…

Posted on by Run Stu

The new Suunto Ambit Peak has only just arrived on the shelves at the store and already proving to be popular. With quite a few changes over it’s predecessor, it is more of a Smart Watch than just another GPS or Heart Rate Monitor. These I described in a recent article for the Accelerate Magazine, The Ambit3 – A New ‘Smart Watch’? So how about in use, real time? I was lucky enough to get my hands on the shiniest of the new Ambit’s, the Peak Sapphire. Oh yes, it’s shiny all right, and you would think it would feel … Continue reading

Finishing with a win

Posted on by Team Accelerate

Well, that’s it. Season 2014 is officially done and dusted. Last Sunday I raced at the UK Duathlon Championships. Hosted at Emberton Park near Milton Keynes, this year’s Championship was scheduled to bring the curtain down on the UK triathlon/duathlon season, rather than its traditional date as the opening act in March. As temperatures plummeted across the UK last weekend, you would have been forgiven for believing it actually was March! Almost exactly a month after returning from the Powerman World Championships in Switzerland, I really didn’t know how well recovered my body was. The small amount of training I’d … Continue reading

Salomon Fellcross 3 Review

Posted on by Guest Blogger

I first ran in the Fellcross 1 at the Salomon test evening at Longshaw last year and really liked them. They had a reasonable level of stiffness and a good outsole which looked as if it was going to be grippy. There is nothing else going on with the shoe – no posting or features to help control pronation- which I also like as I like to feel I am running as I should be and not being pushed in a certain direction by the shoe. The heel to forefoot drop is 4mm and I am happy at this level. … Continue reading

What is going on at the Performance Centre this Winter?

Posted on by Guest Blogger

Well with winter approaching and with it the cold, dark, wet weather we thought we would sort out a program of workshops that cover all things to do with running. Some of these are talks in the warm, some are going to involve running about outside – both in daylight, darkness, being led or having to find your own way (with help of course). So have a look at what we have planned and be great to see you on some of these. This is just a summary and more details and how to book will be posted closer to … Continue reading

Calling all Mountain Goats….!

Posted on by Guest Blogger

Welcome to the Accelerate Mountain Goat system. A scale from 1 to 5, where a single ‘Goat’ indicates the simplest of routes, while 5 ‘Goats’ means you’ll be faced with some difficult terrain and may be required to navigate over challenging terrain with no ‘escape route’. Here’s the full list of ratings – intended as a rough guide.  If you’re considering a trip out with us, you can still always give us a call and ask. Those joining us on Friday’s inov-8 Head Torch Run, rest assured – it’ll be a solid 3 Goat affair.         … Continue reading

Dot’s 2014 race review

Posted on by Guest Blogger

My race year did not go exactly to plan. I had set myself a challenging year to include more fell running. In February I would go up to Maryport, Cumbria for the BMAF 10mile road championships. In March I would attempt the Edale Skyline fell race and then would apply for the BMAF mountain running championship in Telfes Austria in early September. It is only 8k in distance but 760m elevation. After a very good 2013, probably my best running year so far, I was ready for anything but a diagnosis of breast cancer following a routine scan threw all … Continue reading
