There’s a lot more interest in ultra distances than ever before. Accelerate love them! They’re gaining momentum world wide, and have many people arguing for the kind of exposure previously reserved for races like the London Marathon. Dean Karnazes, described as the ‘fittest man in the world’ has long been a massive inspiration, writing best selling books about his achievements in Ultra distance running. Big names like Anton Krupika, Hal Koerner, Geoff Roes , Kilian Jornet recently took part in the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run together, and were filmed along the way for a documentary called Unbreakable. Also representing the Ultra elite are runners such as USA’s Scott Jurek, Dakota Jones, Canada’s Tracy Garneau, and Britain’s own Lizzy Hawker, and Jez Bragg. With interest in Ultra running here in the UK (arguably) at an all time high, events are popping up more and more. Next week for example sees the latest High Peak Marathon taking place. More of an adventure race than a pure Ultra, the comparatively short course (42 miles) requires night time navigation skills, as it commences at 11 o’clock pm. Previous participants include famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
With all of this in mind, and with one of the most beautiful parts of the UK right at our door Accelerate are very excited to announce a new event for 2012. Our aim is to provide an event that can hold its own against anything else the UK has to offer, with a range of distances available, all of which benefit from what the Peak National Park has to offer.
BIG RUNNING WEEKEND, is a two day festival of running for people of all ages. Hosted and coorganised by Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, who are also the official event charity, situated right at the heart of the action. It’ll be crammed with fun events. Key among them will be the Ultra Tour of the Peak District, or UTPD. A roughly circular Trail Race across the Peak National Park, that promises to be every bit as challenging as the Lake District Ultra. Saturday 25th August begins at 2pm when camping on site becomes available, and from 4pm Registration will be open along with a Trade Show. At 7pm the first of our events kicks off in the form of an informative and entertaining lecture from special guests, plus an Ultra Running film or similar. Food will be available between 5-9pm. We shut down at 10pm for some all important rest. 6am Sunday 26th August sees Registration, Trade Show and Breakfast spring into action, ahead of the 7.30am UTPD Race Briefing. At 8am our second event will be underway with the mighty UTPD Race/Relay. 10.12am is the start of the 12.12mile Trail Race, event number three. At 11.20am we expect to see the first finishers from the 12.12 arriving, and those from the UTPD appearing from around 4.30pm. An excellent opportunity for you to show some support to those involved. From 6pm it’ll be the post race party where everyone can listen to and enjoy live bands/music until 11pm. Monday morning on the 27th begins with 8.30am Registration/Trade Show/Breakfast, with events four and five being the Kiddies Race at 9.30am, and the Whirlow Hall Farm 10K Trail Race at 10.30am. Fifth and final event at midday on monday will be the Prize Presentation for all events. Accelerate will of course be there to provide plenty of equipment, nutrition and a variety of essential items for those in need, or convinced they should be getting out more.
To wet your appetite, take a look at the elevation for the Ultra Tour Of The Peak District below….
….and the kind of scenery you’ll ‘enjoy’.

With the introduction of this massive new addition to the running calendar, Accelerate, Whirlow Hall Farm Trust and race coordinator Eight Point Two are now proud to rub shoulders with organisers such as Dark&White, Dukeries and Enduranceevents, all of whom hold their own highly respected Ultras, and more besides. We are quite frankly ‘buzzing’ about this event.
We believe ours will be an event like no other, with total immersion for runners and spectators alike. If you’ve yet to try your hand at an Ultra, then now’s the time to start training!
