What is the BIG Running Weekend?
Part of the Sheffield “Outdoor City Big Weekender” which is now in its third year, the BIG Running Weekend joins for the first time.
Based from the Eccelsall Woodland Discover Centre the BIG RW is organised by WoodRun in association with Sheffield’s leading independent running Store Accelerate will offer a multitude of running activity that will test more than just your legs!
It is also about running activity for all the family and will include workshops and talks to help you improve your running, a chance to ‘test shoes and kit’ and you can challenge yourself with the timed Hill Sprint or the BIG Running Weekend Challenge. There will be a mix of running experts available all weekend for everyone to talk to.
Summary of the Weekend's Events
As part of the weekend there will be a series of challenging ‘Led Runs’, that should you Go For the Big Running Weekend Challenge you will cover a maximum of 47 Kilometres from Friday evening through to Sunday afternoon and cover three of the Outdoor City Run Routes: the Inov8 Black, the Accelerate Red and the Eccelsall Blue loop.
Are you fit enough for the challenge?
The event kicks off on Friday evening with a talk from the very popular Ben Mounsey. The ‘El Capitano’ runs for Calder Valley, loves racing in Italy and has also represented Great Britain in Fell and Mountain running on a number of occasions. The evening closes with a led run…your call, but let’s get this party away and running!
WoodRun will also be offering three specific training sessions on the Saturday covering Technique, Strength and Stability.
On Saturday and Sunday there is also the chance to attend the Accelerate Performance Centre Trail School, in which a variety of topics will be covered ranging from Running Technique through to Training Goal Setting and steps to writing a Training Plan. All practical steps to help you plan a more effective training program and to discover the areas that will help make a better runner.
Saturday afternoon offers a training session geared toward budding Junior runners followed by a talk on ‘making the grade’ as a runner, across any area of the sport. Inov-8 and Scott supported runners will be taking the lead on this one, talking from their own experience. Anna Hoogkamer (Inov8) was the English Fell Championships U23 Runner Up and Meg Wilson (Scott) has now earned her full International Running vest. So what did they do to achieve so much last year and how did they make the step up from Junior running to a senior level?
The evening will host a talk from Ultra Runner Damian Hall who finished 12th overall at last years Ultra Tour du Mont Blanc which will be coupled with a number of running and adventure films.
Then Sunday takes on a more family flavour with our much in demand Family WoodRun and a shorter Led Run suitable for 9 years and up. A great way for the family to explore the area.
The afternoon will also see a more women’s flavour with talks and running chat.

What is the Cost of the Weekend?
To keep things straightforward the cost for the whole weekend is £10 for anyone over the age of 16. We would ask that youngsters are always accompanied by an adult. Your weekend pass and details will be sent out to you a couple of weeks before the event. Your wristband is what gets you onto each of the activities, into the talks and films etc. No wristband then no partcipation. That said anyone who wants to come along and take a look around, then more the merrier!
The Trail School will cost £25 and includes your BIG Running Weekend Pass.
Booking is straightforward. You can call into the store or you can book online here >>
For the Trail School, places are limited and has now Sold Out!
What Happens to the money raised from the event?
Simply it stays with WoodRun. 20% of the profit will go back into maintaining the Outdoor City Run Routes and ensuring the waymarkers are always there to be followed, it could be for printing the maps...
In addition we also part-fund the Run Leaders and Coaches at WoodRun to attend coaching courses and other relevant ongoing personal development. This is something in time we would like to roll out to and help others with groups using the Run Routes.
Inov-8 have already contributed to helping establish the run routes, fully supporting the Inov-8 Black Route.
What is the WoodRun?
WoodRun is a weekly coached training session that now has three regular running groups that meet up every Thursday morning at 9:15am. It’s not a run as such, yet it is a session geared towards improving running technique, strength and also stability using the tracks and trails within Eccelsall Woods.
WoodRun caters for all abilities and ages form late teens upwards, and costs £2 a session and is led by fully qualified and trained coaches. Pictured, Kid's WoodRun, something that takes place during the school holidays and will definitely be a part of the Sunday's activities.
Who is Supporting the BIG Running Weekend?
Some pretty big names on the local and international running scene. British based company Inov-8 will be leading the pack with Scott, Saucony and Silva all heavily involved.
Each will as a minimum be there to talk kit and gear, yet more importantly the chance to try their latest footwear on the trails of Eccelsall Woods or on one the longer more testing routes.
Inov8 will also be heavily involved in the ‘Talks’ and Film evening, whilst Silva are hosting a Workshop on Night Time Train Running.
Accelerate, Sheffield’s leading independent running store, along with the Accelerate Performance Centre will be involved throughout the weekend. Leading runs, coached sessions and the Trail School.
Eccelsall Woodland Discover Centre
Set in the extensive and beautiful Ecclesall woods, the Woodland Discovery Centre is the perfect indoor and outdoor facility for a spectrum of events and a visit to the woods.
The centre runs craft courses all through the year from cider making to wood work skills. Public events in the autumn and spring celebrate Sheffield’s rich woodland heritage and demonstrates the unique facilities of the centre, as well as providing activities such as story-telling, discovering nature and traditional uses of wood in the home and garden.
It is also home to WoodRun and the Woodland Coffee Stop. Four of the Outdoor City Run Routes also start and finish from here, including the two longest routes: The Inov-8 Black Run and the Accelerate Red Route.
